Bright orange opal occurs within and on a pale volcanic matrix. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1267\" data-end=\"1557\">The fire opal forms a compact, irregularly bounded area that contrasts clearly with the whitish to cream-colored host rock. Depending on the lighting, the opal appears vivid orange to orange-brown. Its surface shows a waxy to slightly vitreous luster.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1559\" data-end=\"1653\">Measuring 2.5 \u00d7 2.5 \u00d7 1.5 cm, the piece belongs to the thumbnail specimen size category.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"182ptn2\" data-start=\"1655\" data-end=\"1704\">Fire Opal from the Carbonera Mine in Quer\u00e9taro<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1706\" data-end=\"1915\">The Carbonera Mine near La Trinidad is a well-known Mexican locality for fire opal. Opals from the region occur in volcanic rocks and fill cavities and fine fractures within the rhyolite. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1917\" data-end=\"2162\">Silica-bearing fluids entered these open spaces. The deposition of hydrous silica produced compact opal areas in various colors.
