Several black schorl crystals occur on a pale feldspar matrix, while colorless to whitish hyalite opal is present on the opposite side. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"453\" data-end=\"734\">The schorl crystals are concentrated mainly along the upper edge of the specimen. The largest crystal reaches a length of approximately 5 mm. On the other side, botryoidal to drop-shaped hyalite opal aggregates occur and display distinct yellow-green fluorescence under long-wave UV light.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"736\" data-end=\"865\">Measuring 5.4 \u00d7 3.3 \u00d7 3.0 cm and weighing 34.7 g, the specimen belongs to the small cabinet size category.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"bd70iz\" data-start=\"867\" data-end=\"920\">Black Schorl Crystals on Pale Feldspar Matrix<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"922\" data-end=\"1176\">The schorl forms several short prismatic black crystals with clearly visible crystal faces. The crystals are arranged in a small group and stand out distinctly against the white to cream-colored feldspar matrix. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1178\" data-end=\"1407\">Some of the schorl crystals are partly embedded in the matrix, while others are more exposed. The largest crystal measures approximately 5 mm. The crystal group creates a strong color contrast with the otherwise pale specimen. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1409\" data-end=\"1638\">The feldspar matrix displays a finely crystallized surface with locally parallel structures. The exact feldspar species has not been identified and is therefore described neutrally as feldspar or a member of the feldspar group. <\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"1v7kdu6\" data-start=\"1640\" data-end=\"1679\">Botryoidal Hyalite Opal on the Reverse Side<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1681\" data-end=\"1916\">Colorless to whitish hyalite opal occurs on the opposite side of the specimen. It forms small botryoidal, rounded, and drop-shaped aggregates distributed along depressions and crystal surfaces of the feldspar matrix. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1918\" data-end=\"2163\">Hyalite is a water-bearing, non-crystalline form of silica. Under normal lighting, it appears largely colorless to milky white and therefore contrasts only subtly with the pale matrix. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2165\" data-end=\"2371\">The different distribution of the minerals creates two clearly distinct viewing sides: one with the black schorl crystals and another with the botryoidal hyalite opal aggregates.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"15vun0o\" data-start=\"2373\" data-end=\"2425\">Yellow-Green Fluorescence under Long-Wave UV Light<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"2427\" data-end=\"2618\">Under long-wave UV light, the hyalite opal displays strong yellow-green to green fluorescence. The rounded and drop-shaped aggregates are particularly prominent under UV illumination. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2620\" data-end=\"2912\">The feldspar matrix itself shows no visible fluorescence. Its pink to violet appearance in the UV photographs is caused by the incident UV light and its reflections. This color effect should not be confused with fluorescence of the feldspar itself.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2914\" data-end=\"3122\">The strong difference between the inconspicuous appearance of the hyalite opal under normal light and its intense reaction under UV illumination is the main mineralogical feature of this specimen.<\/p>\n<h2 data-section-id=\"6zo3m1\" data-start=\"3124\" data-end=\"3167\">Mineral Association from the Erongo Mountains<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3169\" data-end=\"3446\">The Erongo Mountains are known for a wide range of pegmatite minerals and unusual mineral associations. The combination of black schorl, pale feldspar matrix, and fluorescent hyalite opal brings together three visually and mineralogically contrasting components within a compact specimen. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3448\" data-end=\"3721\">The schorl side is characterized by its strong light-dark contrast, while the hyalite side reveals its full visual effect only under UV light.
