Aesthetic Pyrite Crystal Cluster with Rainbow Iridescence from Ambasaguas, La Rioja, Spain

An Exceptional Self-Collected Specimen from Spain

This pyrite crystal cluster comes from Ambasaguas in La Rioja, Spain, and was personally collected by me during a mineralogical trip in 2023. The specimen combines exceptional aesthetics with documented provenance and therefore holds a special place in the Mineralien-Weltweit showroom.

The specimen displays a highly aesthetic pyrite cluster with metallic luster, sharply developed crystal faces, and fine striations. Particularly striking is the natural rainbow iridescence, which reveals golden, violet, magenta, and bluish hues depending on the angle of the light. These optical effects give the specimen an unusual visual character, with its appearance changing noticeably as the viewing angle shifts.

Why This Specimen Is Presented in the Showroom

This specimen represents the philosophy of Mineralien-Weltweit particularly well. It was not purchased, but personally discovered, collected, and documented during a geological excursion. The combination of personal provenance, aesthetic crystal formation, and natural rainbow iridescence makes this pyrite a distinctive collector’s specimen.

Locality

Ambasaguas, in the Spanish region of La Rioja, is one of the best-known localities for well-developed pyrite crystals. While nearby Navajún is especially famous for its almost perfectly cubic crystals, Ambasaguas is also known for more complex crystal groups and attractive intergrowths. Pyrite specimens from this region are valued for their strong metallic luster and variety of crystal forms and have long been regarded as classic Spanish collector minerals.
