A Personal Find from One of Europe’s Most Famous Pyrite Localities
This aesthetic pyrite crystal on matrix was personally collected by me in 2023 during a mineralogical excursion with friends at Ambas Aguas (Muro de Aguas), La Rioja, Spain.
The locality is one of the world’s best-known deposits for exceptionally well-formed pyrite crystals. While the perfect cubes from nearby Navajún have achieved international fame, the crystals from Ambas Aguas are also highly valued by collectors for their variety of crystal forms and natural aesthetics.
This specimen features a single, well-developed pyrite crystal on natural matrix with a strong metallic luster. Particularly characteristic are the finely wrinkled crystal faces. These are not the result of weathering or damage, but rather an expression of natural crystal growth. During crystallization, {100} and {210} developed simultaneously. The interplay of these two crystal forms gives the crystal its characteristic finely textured surface.
Why This Specimen Is Presented in the Showroom
This specimen is presented not only for its aesthetics, but also for its documented provenance and the story behind its discovery.
The pyrite is a self-collected specimen that I recovered during a mineralogical trip to Spain. Such pieces have a special personal value to me because they not only document a classic locality, but also preserve memories of geological fieldwork and the shared search with fellow collectors.
It is precisely this combination of personal history, documented provenance, and a world-famous pyrite locality that makes this specimen a special part of my showroom.
Locality
Ambas Aguas (also Ambásaguas) belongs to the municipality of Muro de Aguas in the Spanish region of La Rioja and is considered one of the classic European localities for exceptionally well-crystallized pyrite.
The deposit is known for its extraordinary variety of crystal forms. In addition to cubic crystals, pyritohedra and numerous transitional forms also occur. Together with the nearby locality of Navajún, Ambas Aguas is one of the world’s most important pyrite localities and has attracted mineral collectors from many countries for decades.
