This attractive miniature specimen shows an unusual color variety of andradite from the classic Skjerpemyr locality in the Grua mining district near Lunner, Akershus, Norway. In contrast to the more common brown andradite crystals, this specimen features olive-green to yellow-green crystals with an attractive luster.
The crystals are protected within a natural cavity in the host rock. This allows the crystallization to be clearly seen, while the surrounding matrix forms a natural frame.
Classic Skarn Locality in the Grua Mining District
Skjerpemyr is one of the well-known skarn localities of the Grua mining district. The deposit is known for numerous characteristic skarn minerals and has a long collecting history.
The area is now legally protected as a natural monument. Mineral collecting is not permitted there, giving older collection specimens from Skjerpemyr a special connection to the locality.
With dimensions of 5.0 × 3.4 × 2.5 cm and a weight of 48.7 g, this is a compact miniature specimen. Its particular appeal lies in the olive-green to yellow-green color and the protected crystallization within the natural cavity.
