This pyrite specimen comes from Nalhof near Bösingfeld in the Extertal region of Germany. The freely grown aggregate consists of numerous closely intergrown pyrite crystals and is crystallized on all sides.
The individual crystals show predominantly cubic forms. Their dense intergrowth creates a compact, approximately spherical aggregate with a distinctly three-dimensional surface. The brown to bronze-brown coloration is caused by natural surface oxidation of the pyrite. Such limonitized surfaces are characteristic of many pyrite specimens from the Extertal region.
Measuring 3.0 × 3.0 × 2.5 cm, the piece belongs to the thumbnail specimen size category. It weighs 69.5 g including the display base.
Pyrite from a Well-Known German Locality
The Extertal region is known for pyrite crystals in a variety of habits. In addition to cubic crystals, pyritohedra and combinations of different crystal forms also occur. Many specimens show a brown coloration caused by natural surface oxidation.
The crystallization on all sides and the compact, rounded shape make this a characteristic specimen from the Bösingfeld area.
