Monazite from the Herrebøkasa Pegmatite
Herrebøkasa is a granite pegmatite near Aspedammen in the Idd area close to Halden. The locality is known for various rare pegmatite minerals. Monazite has been scientifically documented from this locality. Herrebøkasa is also the type locality of the rare mineral aspedamite.
Monazite belongs to a group of phosphate minerals that contain rare-earth elements and may also contain significant amounts of thorium. Due to its crystallographic form and specialized Norwegian locality, this single crystal is suitable as a locality specimen for a systematic mineral collection.
