Bituminous Agate from Nowy Kościół, Poland – Banded with Quartz Core

This Agate from Nowy Kościół in Lower Silesia, Poland shows a striking dark to black banding surrounding a lighter quartz and drusy area in the center. The polished front surface reveals the internal structure of the agate very clearly, while the natural reddish-brown outer matrix has been preserved.

The specimen measures 6.0 × 4.0 × 2.0 cm and weighs 84.3 g. It comes from the collection of Dr. Diether Gräf, giving the piece a documented provenance.

Dark agate bands with bituminous material

Agates from Nowy Kościół are known, among other features, for very dark to black bands. Studies of comparable material from the locality have shown that these dark areas can contain finely distributed organic matter or bituminous material in addition to mineral inclusions.

The dark coloration should not be attributed exclusively to bitumen. Rather, it results from a combination of organic matter and additional mineral components. These bituminous dark bands are one of the mineralogically interesting features known from certain agates from Nowy Kościół.

In this specimen, several dark gray to black, finely banded zones surround a lighter quartz-rich central area. Gray, olive-toned and reddish-brown transitions are also visible in places.

Agate from Nowy Kościół in Lower Silesia

Nowy Kościół, historically also known by the German name Neukirch, is one of the classic agate localities of Lower Silesia. The agates occur in volcanic rocks and are known for a wide variety of banding, colors and cavity fillings.

In this specimen, the central quartz area is particularly noticeable in addition to the agate banding. The preserved outer matrix also shows the original geological relationship between the agate and its volcanic host rock.

The combination of dark banding, an open quartz-rich central area, natural outer matrix and documented provenance makes this specimen interesting both mineralogically and from a collection-history perspective.
