Attractive elbaite specimen from Rožná in Moravia, Czech Republic. Several elongated tourmaline crystals display delicate green, pink, and pale lilac colors and are set in a light-colored pegmatite matrix. Mica-rich, partly pink areas of the matrix are probably lepidolite. An interesting locality specimen from a classic Czech pegmatite locality.
Elbaite from the Rožná Pegmatite
This mineral specimen comes from the well-known Rožná pegmatite in Moravia, Czech Republic. Elbaite belongs to the tourmaline group and is especially known for its wide range of colors. This specimen contains several elongated elbaite crystals displaying pale green, pink, and delicate lilac colors.
The different coloration of the individual crystals is particularly attractive. Some of the elbaites are predominantly pale green, while others show pink to lilac areas. This creates a varied appearance that clearly distinguishes the specimen from single-colored tourmaline specimens.
The elbaite crystals are partly exposed and partly embedded in a light-colored pegmatite matrix. In addition to quartz and feldspar, mica-rich areas are present that, based on the typical mineral association of the locality, are probably lepidolite. The delicate pink to violet mica-rich areas complement the pastel-colored tourmalines particularly well.
Rožná is a classic pegmatite locality in Moravia and is especially known for its lithium-rich mineralization. The association of colored elbaite with lithium-rich mica makes specimens from this locality particularly interesting to collectors of tourmalines, pegmatite minerals, and classic European mineral localities.
Measuring 7 × 4.7 × 3 cm, the specimen is a good hand-specimen size. Several elbaite crystals are clearly visible on the front, while the side view reveals additional crystals within the pegmatite matrix.
