This mango quartz crystal group comes from Cabiche near Quípama in the Department of Boyacá, Colombia. Three intergrown, elongated prismatic quartz crystals form a compact group with the characteristic yellowish-orange areas at the crystal tips.
The coloration is caused by fine halloysite inclusions concentrated in specific growth zones of the quartz. The remaining crystal areas are colorless and transparent to translucent. The crystal faces display a distinct vitreous luster.
Mango Quartz from Cabiche, Colombia
Mango quartz is a distinctive form of quartz containing yellowish to orange halloysite inclusions. Specimens from Cabiche have become known for their striking color distribution and generally clear quartz crystals.
The present group measures 4.5 × 4.0 × 2.0 cm and weighs 28 g. Consisting of three intergrown crystals, it is a compact miniature specimen. The piece was acquired directly from a miner in Coscuez during a personal trip to Colombia.
