This Hessonite specimen from Žulová in the Czech Republic is densely covered on the front with numerous honey-brown to reddish-brown garnet crystals. Several crystals show clearly developed crystal faces and stand out well from the lighter matrix with their locally strong luster.
The specimen measures 9 × 6 × 2.5 cm and weighs 239.5 g. It is therefore classified as a Cabinet specimen. The Hessonite crystals are predominantly opaque; individual crystals and thinner edge areas, however, appear translucent.
Honey-brown Hessonite crystals with distinct rhombic dodecahedra
The crystals show a color range from honey-brown and orange-brown to dark reddish-brown. Especially in the detail views, several well-developed individual crystals with clearly recognizable crystal faces stand out.
The crystal habit is predominantly rhombic dodecahedral. Numerous crystals are densely intergrown and cover large parts of the specimen surface. Some more freely developed crystals show a distinct vitreous luster.
The Hessonite crystals are mostly opaque. Individual crystals and especially thinner crystal edges, however, allow some light to pass through and appear locally translucent. Under suitable lighting, this creates attractive color variations between honey-brown, orange-brown and reddish-brown.
Hessonite from the classic Žulová locality
Žulová in the Jeseníky region of the Czech Republic is a traditional locality for garnets, including Hessonite. Hessonite is a honey-yellow to reddish-brown variety of Grossular and occurs in the Žulová area in characteristic crystal specimens.
This cabinet specimen is particularly notable for the large number of visible Hessonite crystals. Several well-developed rhombic dodecahedra and the densely crystallized surface make it a representative collector specimen from this classic Czech locality.
