This emerald specimen from the Chivor District in Colombia shows several vivid green emerald crystals and crystal aggregates on a light mineralized zone over dark host rock. The emeralds occur in different areas of the specimen and form a strong color contrast with the white to gray-white matrix and the nearly black rock.
Particularly striking is a single, well-formed prismatic emerald crystal with a vivid green color, clearly projecting from the matrix. On another side of the specimen, several elongated, partly intergrown emerald crystals show a distinctly different crystal arrangement. As a result, the specimen offers several interesting viewing angles.
Green emerald crystals on light matrix
The most prominent crystal has a vivid green color and clearly recognizable prismatic crystal faces. It sits freely along the edge of the mineralized zone and stands out particularly well from the surrounding rock. Its comparatively good crystal form makes it the visual focal point of the specimen.
Additional emeralds occur in different forms across the matrix. Especially noticeable is a group of slender, elongated crystals and intergrown crystal sections extending over a larger part of the mineralized area. Some crystals are partly surrounded by accompanying minerals, while others are more clearly exposed.
The different forms of the emeralds also make the specimen mineralogically interesting. Rather than showing only a single crystal, it displays several growth forms and differently oriented crystal groups on the same matrix.
Emerald from the Chivor District in Colombia
The Chivor District in Boyacá belongs to Colombia’s eastern emerald belt and is one of the classic mining areas for Colombian emeralds. Specimens from this district often show green emeralds in light mineralized zones within dark sedimentary host rock.
Measuring 4.5 × 3.0 × 2.4 cm and weighing 37.3 g, this is a miniature specimen. Despite its compact size, the piece has a varied appearance due to the multiple visible emerald crystals, the strong color contrast, and the different crystal groups.
