Emerald on Matrix from the Coscuez Mine, Colombia

This compact emerald specimen comes from the Coscuez Mine near San Pablo de Borbur in the Colombian department of Boyacá. An intensely green emerald crystal measuring approximately 5 mm is clearly visible on a predominantly white matrix with darker rock areas.

The main crystal already stands out distinctly in the overall view. Its strong color, recognizable crystal form, and exposed position form the visual focal point of the small specimen.

Measuring 2.3 × 2.0 × 2.0 cm, the specimen belongs to the thumbnail size category.

Intensely Green, Well-Exposed Crystal

The emerald crystal shows a short-prismatic habit with clearly recognizable faces. Large parts of the crystal body are exposed, allowing it to be viewed from several directions.

The close-up image reveals a strong, vivid green color. The crystal is translucent and displays numerous natural internal structures. Under direct illumination, some marginal areas show greater light transmission.

Additional small green emerald areas occur on the matrix around the main crystal. They complement the specimen without detracting from the visual impact of the central crystal.

Contrasting Natural Matrix

The pale matrix creates a distinct contrast with the green emerald. Dark, fine-grained to platy-looking rock areas further structure the front of the specimen and enhance the color effect of the main crystal.

The matrix has an irregular structure with small cavities, fracture surfaces, and additional green mineralization. Despite its compact size, the specimen therefore has a varied three-dimensional appearance.

The pale matrix dominates the reverse side. Only smaller green areas are visible there, while the main crystal is concentrated on the preferred display side.

Coscuez – A Classic Source of Colombian Emeralds

The Coscuez Mine is one of the traditional emerald localities of Boyacá’s western emerald belt. It is well known as an important source of Colombian emeralds and has produced both loose crystals and less common matrix specimens.

This specimen combines documented Coscuez provenance with a clearly recognizable, intensely colored emerald crystal on natural matrix. It is particularly suitable for collections focused on Colombian minerals, beryl varieties, and classic emerald localities.

Compact Thumbnail Specimen on an Acrylic Base

The specimen is mounted on a transparent acrylic base measuring 2.5 × 2.5 × 1.2 cm. The total weight, including the base, is 20 g.

The upright mounting presents the main crystal clearly from the front. The different views document both its degree of exposure and the distribution of the smaller emerald areas across the matrix.
