Three Emerald Crystals on Calcite Matrix from Chivor, Boyacá, Colombia

Three intensely green emerald crystals sit prominently in a pale calcite matrix. The largest crystal reaches a length of approximately 1.5 cm and shows a clearly prismatic, nearly hexagonal habit. Two additional green crystals complement the specimen and create an attractive multiple-crystal arrangement.

The emeralds are predominantly translucent and display a vitreous luster. Their strong green color contrasts clearly with the pale calcite matrix. Because the crystals are partly embedded, the natural relationship between the emeralds and the associated mineralization remains clearly visible.

Emerald from Chivor in Colombia

Chivor is located in the Department of Boyacá and belongs to Colombia’s eastern emerald belt. Emerald mining in the region dates back to pre-Hispanic times and continues to shape the history of the area today.

This specimen shows three visible emerald crystals on calcite matrix. The approximately 1.5 cm long main crystal forms the visual focus, while two additional crystals complement the display side. The pale matrix strengthens the contrast with the intensely green emeralds.

The specimen was acquired directly from a local miner in Chivor during a personal trip to Colombia. With dimensions of 6.5 × 5.0 × 3.0 cm, this is a small cabinet specimen. The total weight is 119 g. Its particular appeal lies in the three visible emerald crystals, the color contrast with the calcite matrix, and its direct provenance from Chivor.
