Sky-Blue Euclase in Quartz Matrix from La Media Luna, Colombia

This euclase specimen comes from La Media Luna near Pauna in the department of Boyacá, Colombia. The locality lies in the vicinity of the well-known La Marina Mine and near San Pablo de Borbur in Colombia’s western emerald belt.

Several sky-blue euclase crystals and crystal sections are embedded in a pale quartz matrix. The blue areas stand out clearly against the white to colorless substrate and are visible from several viewing angles.

Measuring 2.9 × 2.6 × 1.8 cm and weighing 14 g, the specimen belongs to the thumbnail size category.

Several Blue Euclase Crystals in a Compact Specimen

The front is characterized by several well-developed, pale blue euclase sections. The centrally positioned crystal area is particularly noticeable because of its more intense blue color. Additional euclase crystals emerge along the upper edge and on the reverse side of the specimen.

The crystals are predominantly translucent. Along thinner edges and in individual marginal areas, they appear partially transparent. Fine growth structures as well as natural cleavage and fracture surfaces give the blue crystal sections a varied appearance.

The white to colorless quartz matrix encloses parts of the euclase crystals. This preserves the natural relationship between the rare mineral and its mineral matrix.

Euclase from the Western Emerald Belt

Colombia is primarily known for its emeralds. However, rarer mineral species such as euclase also occur in the western emerald belt. The La Marina Mine near Pauna is documented as a euclase locality, and quartz is among the associated minerals recorded there.
