This mineral specimen comes from the Saga I Quarry near Tvedalen, Norway. Pale violet diaspore aggregates occur together with white, acicular natrolite on a predominantly pale natrolite matrix.
The violet mineralization is concentrated mainly in the drusy and more strongly crystallized areas of the front. Numerous fine white natrolite crystals occur between these zones, either individually, in small groups, or in partially radiating arrangements.
Measuring 6.4 × 4.5 × 2.0 cm and weighing 47.5 g, the specimen belongs to the small cabinet size category.
Pale Violet Diaspore Aggregates
The diaspore displays a subtle violet to pale lilac color. It does not form large freestanding single crystals, but instead occurs mainly as smaller crystals and crystalline aggregates distributed across several areas of the front.
The diaspore is particularly visible in the open drusy zones. There, its pale violet color stands out against the white to cream-colored natrolite. Numerous small crystal faces produce a lively luster under suitable lighting.
White Acicular Natrolite
Natrolite occurs both as matrix material and as distinctly developed crystals. Several cavities and depressions contain white, slender to acicular crystals that locally form small sprays and radiating groups.
More compact, finely crystallized natrolite areas are also present. The combination of dense pale matrix, open druses, violet diaspore, and white crystal needles gives the specimen a varied surface structure.
Mineral Association from the Saga I Quarry
The Saga I Quarry is known for unusual mineral associations related to alkaline rocks and pegmatites. This specimen documents the association of diaspore and natrolite in a finely crystallized form characteristic of the locality.
The main appeal of the specimen lies less in a single dominant crystal than in the extensive mineralization across the front. Both the pale violet diaspore areas and several generations and forms of natrolite crystallization can be observed from the main viewing side.
The reverse does not display a similarly pronounced crystallization. The piece is therefore clearly oriented as a front-view specimen and can be presented effectively on an acrylic stand.
