This vanadinite specimen comes from the Mibladen mining district near Midelt in Morocco. Numerous orange to orange-red vanadinite crystals cover a three-dimensional matrix of white to cream-colored barite.
The barite forms thin, bladed to tabular crystals arranged in several overlapping groups. Numerous small vanadinite crystals sit on the crystal faces and between the barite blades. Their strong color and pronounced luster stand out clearly against the pale barite matrix.
Vanadinite on Bladed Barite
Vanadinite is a lead chlorovanadate and a characteristic mineral of Morocco’s lead deposits. Mibladen is regarded as one of the world’s most important localities for vanadinite. The association with bladed barite is particularly characteristic of the locality.
The specimen measures 5.5 × 3.7 × 2.2 cm and weighs 60.7 g. This makes it a compact small cabinet specimen with a densely mineralized and strongly three-dimensional display surface.
