This small tourmaline specimen comes from Varuträsk in Sweden. A green, prismatic tourmaline crystal of the elbaite variety verdelite is partly embedded in a light-colored, quartz- and feldspar-rich matrix.
The largest visible verdelite crystal reaches a length of approximately 1.6 cm. Its longitudinally striated prism faces display different shades of green and stand out clearly against the white to colorless matrix. Additional green tourmaline areas are visible in several parts of the specimen.
Verdelite from Varuträsk
Verdelite is the name used for green elbaite from the tourmaline group. The color intensity can vary within a single crystal and, in this specimen, ranges from pale yellowish green to darker green.
The specimen measures 3.2 × 2.2 × 1.4 cm and weighs 14 g. This makes it a compact miniature specimen with a clearly visible main crystal.
