This quartz-hematite specimen comes from the Florence Mine near Egremont in Cumbria, England. Several colorless quartz crystals occur on a massive hematite matrix together with lustrous, partly platy hematite crystals.
The quartz crystals display the Cumberland habit known from western Cumberland. The prism faces are only weakly developed or almost entirely suppressed, so the crystals appear to be formed mainly by the two rhombohedral terminations. This gives them their characteristic, approximately bipyramidal shape. Comparable quartz crystals on hematite are well documented from the Florence Mine.
Quartz and Hematite from the Florence Mine
The metallic, silver-gray to anthracite-colored hematite crystals form a distinct contrast with the colorless quartz. Several quartz crystals are intergrown and distributed across different areas of the hematite matrix.
The specimen measures 9.0 × 7.0 × 6.5 cm and weighs 490 g. This makes it a compact cabinet specimen from a classic historic locality of the western Cumbrian iron-mining district.
