Attractive small cabinet specimen featuring numerous dark brown to nearly black, lustrous andradite crystals with white quartz on a greenish and pink matrix. This contrasting specimen comes from Bjønndalen Quarry near Nittedal, Akershus, Norway.
Lustrous Andradite with Quartz from Norway
This attractive small cabinet specimen displays numerous dark brown to nearly black andradite crystals on a varied matrix. The well-defined, partly intergrown garnet crystals have a strong vitreous luster and cover much of the display face.
Numerous colorless to white quartz crystals occur between the dark andradites. They form small crystal groups and create a striking light-and-dark contrast. Several cavities add depth to the specimen and emphasize the three-dimensional character of the crystallization.
Greenish mineral areas and pink feldspar zones complete the mineral association. The green material may be tremolite; however, without analytical confirmation, this identification is presented as probable rather than definitive.
Mineral-Rich Specimen from Bjønndalen Quarry
Bjønndalen Quarry is located near Nittedal in Akershus, north of Oslo. The locality is known for a diverse mineral assemblage that includes garnets, quartz, and numerous associated species.
Measuring 6.7 × 5.0 × 2.0 cm, the specimen falls within the small cabinet size category. Despite its relatively shallow form, it has a richly mineralized and visually varied display face. The combination of dark, lustrous andradite crystals, bright white quartz, and the greenish-pink matrix gives the piece considerable visual appeal.
An attractive Norwegian locality specimen for collectors of garnets, andradite, and Scandinavian minerals.
