Calcite on Basaltic Matrix from Jalgaon, India

This calcite specimen comes from the Jalgaon district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. A distinctly developed gray calcite crystal sits protected within a depression in the darker basaltic matrix.

The crystal shows clearly recognizable faces and a gray to grayish-white coloration. Some areas are translucent. Depending on the lighting, the crystal surfaces show a weak to distinct vitreous luster. The pale to gray calcite contrasts with the darker matrix.

Measuring 6.0 × 5.0 × 4.0 cm, the piece belongs to the small cabinet specimen size category. The stated weight of 95.8 g includes the plastic display base.

Calcite from the Deccan Traps of Maharashtra

The Jalgaon district is one of India’s well-known source regions for calcite, zeolites, and other secondary minerals. The area lies within the Deccan Traps, an extensive sequence of basaltic lava flows.

As the basalts cooled, numerous gas bubbles and cavities remained within the rock. Mineral-bearing fluids later circulated through these open spaces. Calcite and other minerals were deposited on the cavity walls.
