This compact mineral specimen comes from the Bouismas Mine in the Bou Azzer mining district of Morocco. Finely branching metallic silver aggregates cover large areas of a white matrix and are visible on several sides of the specimen.
The silver does not form long, free-standing wires. Instead, it occurs as densely branching, dendritic to moss-like aggregates. Their fine ramifications create numerous small metallic structures that stand out clearly against the pale matrix.
Measuring 2.5 × 2.5 × 1.5 cm, the specimen belongs to the thumbnail size category.
Finely Branching Silver Aggregates on White Matrix
The metallic mineralization is distributed across several areas of the specimen. On the front in particular, the silver aggregates form a dense network of short, irregularly branching structures and fine projections.
The aggregates appear silver-gray to locally slightly bronze-colored due to surface tarnishing. Depending on the angle of illumination, individual areas reflect the light distinctly and reveal the three-dimensional structure of the fine metallic growths.
The white matrix has not been identified in greater detail. Its calm, pale surface creates a clear contrast with the metallic silver and emphasizes the dendritic formation particularly well.
Metallic Mineralization Developed on Several Sides
The silver aggregates are not restricted to a single display side. Numerous branching metallic structures also occur on the opposite side and along the lateral areas of the specimen.
Parts of the matrix remain exposed, while other zones are almost completely covered by a fine network of silver. As a result, the specimen reveals different concentrations of mineralization when viewed from various directions.
The combination of compact size, pale matrix, and silver coverage on several sides makes this an unusually varied thumbnail specimen.
Silver from the Bou Azzer Mining District
The Bou Azzer district is particularly well known for its cobalt and arsenic minerals. Native silver and other silver-bearing mineral phases also occur within the district.
According to the available locality and mineral information, this specimen is identified as native silver from the Bouismas Mine. Without analytical testing, however, the precise composition of every finely branching metallic aggregate cannot be differentiated further.
