Emerald from the Chivor District, Colombia – Three Crystals on Large Matrix

This large Emerald specimen from the Chivor District in Colombia features three clearly visible green Emerald crystals on a contrasting matrix. The largest crystal reaches approximately 2.8 cm, while two additional crystals are each about 1 cm in size.

Measuring 13.5 × 5.5 × 3 cm and weighing 275 g, this is a large cabinet specimen. The Emerald crystals are embedded in a pale mineralized zone on the dark host rock, creating a distinct contrast with the matrix.

Three Emerald crystals on matrix

The largest Emerald crystal is strongly prismatic and forms the visual focal point of the specimen. Two smaller, likewise prismatic crystals are also clearly visible.

The Emeralds show a green to slightly bluish-green coloration and are opaque. Their crystal surfaces are partly smooth and lustrous, while other areas are naturally rough and slightly weathered. The main crystal in particular clearly displays the elongated prismatic habit typical of Beryl.

The distribution of the three crystals across the matrix gives the specimen a varied overall appearance without the piece being dominated entirely by a single crystal.

Emerald from the Chivor District

The Chivor District in Colombia’s Eastern Emerald Belt is one of the country’s most important and classic Emerald-producing regions. Emeralds occur there in hydrothermal vein and breccia zones within dark sedimentary host rocks.

This specimen also shows a pronounced contrast between the dark host rock, the pale vein mineralization and the green Emerald crystals. Large areas of the natural matrix are preserved and clearly illustrate the geological setting of the crystals.
