Historic Sulfur Deposit near Tarnobrzeg
Machów Mine near Tarnobrzeg in Poland’s Subcarpathian Voivodeship was an important open-pit sulfur mine. Mining ceased in 1992; the former mining area was later reclaimed and flooded. Today, Lake Tarnobrzeg occupies the former mine site.
Numerous mineral species have been documented from the deposit, including native sulfur, celestine, calcite, gypsum, quartz, and barite. The association of celestine and sulfur is one of the characteristic mineral assemblages of the locality.
Based on its actual dimensions, the specimen can be classified as either a miniature or a small cabinet specimen. Its particular appeal lies in the clear celestine crystals on the bright yellow sulfur matrix.
