Ochre-brown to beige dolomite crystals sit on the original matrix and form a compact, clearly structured crystal group. The earthy colors and characteristic crystal development give the specimen the distinctive appearance of a historic find from the Siegerland mining district.
The crystals show the rhombohedral form typical of dolomite and stand out clearly from the darker matrix. This makes the piece a useful reference specimen for the mineralization of the former Eupel Mine.
Historic Iron Mine near Niederhövels
Eupel Mine was located near Niederhövels, close to Wissen, in today’s Altenkirchen district of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It was one of the historic iron mines of the Siegerland region and closed in 1964.
The locality is especially known for cream-colored to brownish dolomite crystals, sometimes associated with pyrite or chalcopyrite. This specimen shows the ochre-colored dolomite mineralization characteristic of the locality.
With dimensions of 5.4 × 3.7 × 2.0 cm and a weight of 73 g, this is a compact small cabinet specimen. Its particular appeal lies in the classic locality and the ochre-colored dolomite crystals on matrix.
