This emerald specimen comes from the La Emilia Concession in the Gachalá District, Cundinamarca, Colombia. Several vivid green emerald crystals occur within light-coloured carbonate vein mineralization on dark sedimentary host rock.
Particularly attractive is the strong contrast between the green emeralds, the pale vein mineralization and the nearly black matrix. The crystals are partly exposed, while others are intergrown with the matrix or are not completely preserved. This gives the specimen a very natural appearance and clearly shows how emerald mineralization occurs within the host rock.
Several Emerald Crystals in Carbonate Vein Mineralization
The emeralds show a prismatic crystal habit and a vivid green to slightly bluish-green colour. Natural growth structures and inclusions can be seen clearly in the close-up view.
The light-coloured vein mineralization contrasts strongly with the dark host rock. It consists predominantly of carbonate minerals and illustrates the close association between emerald formation and hydrothermal vein mineralization characteristic of Colombia’s Eastern Emerald Belt.
La Emilia Concession in the Gachalá District
The La Emilia Concession is located in the Gachalá District within Colombia’s Eastern Emerald Belt. Gachalá, together with Chivor, is one of the classic emerald-producing regions of the eastern belt and is known for emerald mineralization hosted by sedimentary rocks.
This specimen comes from the more recent La Emilia concession and should not be confused with the historic mine of the same name. The precise provenance makes the specimen especially interesting to collectors who value both mineral aesthetics and well-documented locality information.
