Pyromorphite from the Jeanette Mine near Kransberg, Germany

This pyromorphite specimen comes from the Jeanette Mine near Kransberg in the Hochtaunus district of Hesse, Germany. Green pyromorphite crystals cover several areas of a dark to brownish rock matrix.

The pyromorphite forms small prismatic crystals and densely arranged crystal aggregates. The green color contrasts clearly with the matrix. Depending on the lighting, the crystal surfaces show a weak to distinct vitreous luster. With a length of 6.5 cm, the piece belongs to the small cabinet specimen size category.

Pyromorphite from the Classic Jeanette Mine Locality

The Jeanette Mine, also known as the Johannettenzeche, is located south of Kransberg near Usingen. It is one of the historic lead-silver mines of the Taunus region and was worked during the 19th century. Mining ended in 1894.

Galena and various secondary lead minerals have been documented from the mine. Pyromorphite is one of the characteristic minerals of the locality. The crystals occur mainly in green colors and as prismatic crystals, coatings, or aggregates.

The combination of green pyromorphite, natural matrix, and classic provenance makes this specimen a characteristic locality example from the Taunus region.
