Vanadinite from Mibladen, Morocco – Large Crystals on Matrix

This Vanadinite specimen from Mibladen near Midelt, Morocco, shows numerous reddish-brown to orange Vanadinite crystals on a light to gray-brown matrix. Particularly striking are several larger, thick-tabular to short-prismatic crystals reaching approximately 1 cm in diameter.

Measuring 10.2 × 5.0 × 3.5 cm and weighing 171.3 g, this is a large cabinet specimen. The crystallization is concentrated especially along the upper edge and in a densely covered section of the matrix, where larger individual crystals rise above a surface of numerous smaller Vanadinite crystals.

Vanadinite crystals up to 1 cm

The largest Vanadinite crystals reach approximately 1 cm in diameter and show the characteristic hexagonal habit of the mineral. In addition to these larger crystals, numerous smaller, closely spaced crystals cover parts of the matrix almost completely.

The coloration ranges from orange-brown through reddish brown to vivid red areas. Most of the crystals are opaque, while some of the larger red crystals are partly translucent.

The crystal faces show a distinct luster. The combination of larger individual crystals with densely crystallized areas creates a varied, three-dimensional mineralization.

Vanadinite from Mibladen

Mibladen near Midelt is one of the classic Moroccan localities for Vanadinite and is internationally known for intensely colored crystal specimens. Typical material from the locality includes red, orange and reddish-brown Vanadinite crystals on a variety of matrix types.

This specimen combines larger, clearly prominent crystals with densely covered areas consisting of numerous smaller Vanadinite crystals. The strong contrast between the reddish-brown crystals and the lighter matrix gives the specimen a characteristic appearance for the locality.
