This small diaspore specimen comes from the Saga II Quarry in Norway. A distinctly violet aggregate of fine, elongated diaspore crystals sits on a light-colored natrolite matrix.
The crystals form a compact, slightly radiating area and stand out clearly against the whitish to pale yellowish natrolite matrix. Depending on the lighting, the color appears pale violet to grayish violet. The fine crystal faces display a distinct luster.
Violet Diaspore from Norway
Diaspore is an aluminum oxide hydroxide that most commonly occurs in colorless, whitish, or brownish forms. Violet crystal aggregates are much more visually distinctive and make this small specimen an interesting reference piece for a systematic mineral collection.
