Attractive calcite specimen from Cavnic in Maramureș, Romania. Two larger, white to creamy-white calcite crystals dominate the appearance of this specimen. Their stout, blocky to rhombohedral-looking habit and the fine crystalline material surrounding them give the specimen a distinctive appearance. An interesting collector’s specimen from a classic Romanian mining district.
Calcite from the Cavnic Mining District
This mineral specimen comes from Cavnic in Maramureș County, northern Romania. The historic mining district is located in the Eastern Carpathians and is one of the country’s best-known mineral localities. Lead, zinc, copper, gold and silver ores were mined here over many centuries.
The hydrothermal vein deposits of Cavnic are characterized by a diverse mineral assemblage. In addition to sulfide minerals such as galena, sphalerite and pyrite, various gangue minerals also occur. Calcite, quartz and barite are particularly well known, along with other mineral species that sometimes form attractive crystal specimens.
This specimen features two prominent, white to creamy-white calcite crystals that clearly stand out from the surrounding fine crystalline material. Their compact habit and relatively large crystal faces define the appearance of the piece.
Crystal Habit and Special Features
Particularly interesting is the stout, blocky to rhombohedral-looking habit of the two larger calcite crystals. The crystals display well-defined faces and a clearly recognizable three-dimensional arrangement.
They differ considerably from the elongated, pointed calcite crystals that are also known from the Cavnic mining district. This compact crystal habit makes the specimen an interesting example of the different crystal forms found in calcite.
The two larger crystals sit among smaller crystals on an irregular matrix. As a result, their shapes stand out clearly from the surrounding surface. The predominantly white to creamy-white coloration gives the specimen a harmonious overall appearance.
Measuring 7.2 × 5.5 × 3 cm and weighing 113.3 g, the specimen has a convenient size. It is particularly suitable for collectors interested in classic European mineral localities and distinctively formed calcite crystals.
