Deep Blue Azurite on Matrix from Kerrouchen, Morocco

This attractive small cabinet specimen features intensely dark blue to deep blue azurite crystals on a pale natural rock matrix. The specimen comes from the classic Moroccan locality traditionally known in the mineral trade as Kerrouchen.

The azurite crystals stand out clearly against the pale matrix. Under direct light, the crystal faces display a pronounced vitreous luster that further enhances their deep blue color.

Classic Moroccan Azurite Locality

The locality known as Kerrouchen has been recognized for azurite and malachite specimens since the 1960s. The copper carbonates occur there in cavities within solid dolomitic rock. In addition to azurite, the locality has also produced malachite and malachite pseudomorphs after azurite.

With dimensions of 6.5 × 4.0 × 3.5 cm and a weight of 79 g, this is a compact small cabinet specimen. Its particular appeal lies in the contrast between the deep blue azurite crystals and the pale matrix.
