Pyrite on Matrix from Ambas Aguas, Spain

This pyrite specimen comes from Ambas Aguas near Muro de Aguas in the Spanish province of La Rioja. A pyrite crystal measuring approximately 2 cm sits prominently on a natural gray matrix.

The brass-yellow crystal shows a combination of cubic and pyritohedral faces. Its surfaces are distinctly textured and display a pronounced metallic luster. Due to its central position, the crystal stands out clearly against the more subdued color of the matrix.

Measuring 12.0 × 7.0 × 4.0 cm, the specimen belongs to the large cabinet specimen size category. It weighs 434 g.

Pyrite from a Classic Spanish Locality

Ambas Aguas is a well-known locality for pyrite crystals with a variety of crystal forms. In addition to cubes, pentagonal dodecahedra, also known as pyritohedra, occur there, as do combinations of both forms. Distinctly striated or irregularly textured crystal faces are also characteristic.

The single, clearly visible main crystal and the natural matrix make this a characteristic specimen from the classic pyrite region of La Rioja.
