Pyromorphite on Sandstone from Tanzfleck, Bavaria, Germany

This pyromorphite specimen comes from the Tanzfleck mining area near Grafenwöhr in the Upper Palatinate, Bavaria, Germany. Numerous small yellow-green pyromorphite crystals cover several areas of a pale sandstone matrix.

The pyromorphite forms densely arranged short-prismatic to slightly barrel-shaped crystals and fine crystal coatings. The yellow-green color contrasts clearly with the beige to light brown matrix. The crystal surfaces show a weak to distinct vitreous luster.

Measuring approximately 3 × 2 × 1.4 cm, the piece belongs to the thumbnail specimen size category.

Pyromorphite from the Classic Tanzfleck Locality

The pyromorphite occurrence known among collectors as Tanzfleck is located near Grafenwöhr in the Upper Palatinate. Specimens are associated with the Beim-Stollen Mine and the historic lead mining activity in this area. The locality is especially known for yellow-green to green pyromorphite crystals on pale sandstone matrix.

Pyromorphite is a secondary lead mineral that forms in the oxidation zones of lead-bearing deposits. Typical crystal forms include hexagonal-prismatic to barrel-shaped crystals in green, yellow-green, brown, or yellowish colors.

The combination of yellow-green crystal coatings, pale sandstone matrix, and classic German provenance makes this piece a characteristic locality specimen from Tanzfleck.
