Attractive cabinet specimen from the well-known Holzen quarry in the Hochsauerland district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Numerous well-formed calcite crystals are developed on a fine-grained dolomite matrix, while small golden chalcopyrite crystals provide appealing color accents.

The combination of calcite, dolomite, and chalcopyrite is one of the characteristic mineral associations of this locality. The three-dimensional specimen shows a balanced distribution of crystals and is suitable both for collections of German minerals and for collectors of aesthetic calcite specimens.

Well-Known Calcite Locality in the Sauerland Region

The “Calcit” quarry near Holzen is one of the well-known calcite localities of the Sauerland region. The deposit is particularly known for calcite crystals and mineral associations with dolomite and various sulfide minerals.

Mineral collecting at the locality has not been permitted since 2007. Older, well-preserved collection specimens from Holzen therefore retain a special connection to this locality.
