This large Sphalerite and Quartz specimen from the Trepča District in Kosovo shows numerous dark brown to nearly black Sphalerite crystals on a matrix densely covered with whitish Quartz crystals. Between the darker crystals, some brown to honey-colored Sphalerite areas occur, standing out through their lighter coloration and partial translucency.
Measuring 17.5 × 13.5 × 3.0 cm and weighing 952.2 g, this is a large cabinet specimen. The broad, plate-like specimen has an almost completely crystallized display surface, with Quartz and Sphalerite intergrown over large areas.
Dark Sphalerite with locally honey-colored areas
The Sphalerite occurs as numerous individual crystals and crystal groups distributed across the Quartz-covered surface. Larger, densely grouped crystals are especially prominent along the upper part and one side of the specimen. Their surfaces show a distinct luster and range in color from dark brown and gray to nearly black.
Among these darker crystals, individual honey-brown to yellowish-brown areas are visible. While most of the Sphalerite is opaque, these lighter-colored parts are locally translucent. The specimen therefore shows different color and transparency expressions of Sphalerite within a single piece.
The Quartz forms a dense layer of numerous small, whitish crystals. On this specimen, the Quartz is translucent and provides a strong visual contrast to the darker Sphalerite.
Sphalerite and Quartz from the Trepča District
The Trepča District in Kosovo is one of the classic European localities for sulfide and gangue-mineral specimens. It is especially well known for combinations of Sphalerite, Galena, Pyrite, Chalcopyrite, Quartz and carbonate minerals.
Trepča specimens are internationally collected for their well-developed sulfide crystals and contrasting mineral associations. Sphalerite is one of the characteristic minerals of the district and can occur in a wide range of colors, from dark brown to nearly black as well as locally lighter, honey-colored varieties.
In addition to its numerous dark Sphalerite crystals, this specimen is notable for the extensive Quartz crystallization covering the matrix. With a width of 17.5 cm, it is a representative large specimen that clearly displays the characteristic contrast between light-colored gangue minerals and dark sulfide crystals.
