This pyrite specimen comes from Bösingfeld in the Extertal region of Germany. The compact, approximately spherical aggregate consists of numerous densely intergrown pyrite crystals.
The individual crystal forms remain clearly visible across the irregularly structured surface. Their close intergrowth creates a nodular, three-dimensional structure. The brown coloration is caused by natural surface oxidation or limonitization of the originally brass-yellow pyrite.
Measuring 4.0 × 4.0 × 3.5 cm, the piece belongs to the miniature specimen size category. It weighs 97 g.
Pyrite from a Well-Known German Locality
The Extertal region is known for rounded and irregularly intergrown pyrite aggregates. The pyrite crystals occur there in sedimentary rocks and often show brown surfaces caused by natural weathering.
The compact, approximately spherical shape and the distinctly structured crystal surface make this a characteristic regional specimen from Bösingfeld.
