Attractive andradite specimen from Dalnegorsk in the Primorsky Krai region of Russia. Numerous dark brown to nearly black garnet crystals with lustrous crystal faces form a dense group on a light-colored matrix with yellowish areas. Thin crystal edges reveal warm amber-brown tones.
Dark Brown Andradite with Well-Developed Crystal Faces from Dalnegorsk
This andradite specimen comes from the renowned mining district of Dalnegorsk in Primorsky Krai, Russian Far East. The specimen features numerous dark brown to nearly black garnet crystals closely intergrown on a light-colored matrix with yellowish to ocher-colored areas.
The larger crystals in the upper part of the specimen are particularly striking. Their predominantly flat faces and frequently dodecahedral appearance clearly reveal the geometric forms of andradite. Several crystal faces display a strong vitreous luster, while fine growth features and minor irregularities add visual interest. Under suitable lighting, thin crystal areas reveal warm brown to amber-colored tones.
The crystals vary in size and form a compact, three-dimensional group. Light-colored matrix areas and yellowish mineral coatings are visible between them, although their exact composition has not been determined. Some crystals show minor damage or incompletely developed edges. The reverse side consists mainly of a light-colored, irregularly textured rock matrix with embedded dark mineral areas.
Dalnegorsk is one of Russia’s classic mineral localities, known for garnets and numerous other mineral species. Measuring 4.5 × 3 × 3 cm, this specimen is a representative example of dark brown andradite crystal development from this important mineral district.
