Attractive galena and sphalerite specimen from Baia Sprie, Romania. Numerous dark gray to nearly black crystals form closely intergrown aggregates with a strong luster. Particularly interesting are the sphalerite areas, which appear partly translucent with olive-green to brownish tones under suitable lighting.
Galena and Sphalerite from the Historic Baia Sprie Mining District
This mineral-rich specimen comes from Baia Sprie in Maramureș County, Romania, a historic mining district in the Eastern Carpathians. It features a dense association of galena and sphalerite, with numerous crystals forming a compact, three-dimensional group.
The front is almost completely covered with dark gray to black crystal aggregates. Particularly striking are the many small, partly well-developed crystal faces, which reflect light to varying degrees and give the specimen a lively luster. Small areas of light-colored, finely crystalline matrix are visible between the dark crystals.
An interesting characteristic is the color appearance of the sphalerite. While much of the crystal aggregate appears nearly black, individual areas reveal olive-green to brownish tones under suitable lighting and are partly translucent. This effect is especially visible under side lighting, creating an attractive contrast with the metallic luster of the galena.
The reverse side reveals larger areas of light-colored to gray rock matrix with additional embedded and surface-grown crystals. Baia Sprie belongs to the historic Baia Mare mining district, known for its hydrothermal lead-zinc mineralization and diverse mineral associations.
Measuring 7.2 × 6.7 × 3 cm, this galena and sphalerite specimen is an attractive collector’s piece with dense crystal coverage and interesting optical characteristics.
