This Aragonite specimen from Santa Eulalia in Chihuahua, Mexico shows a strongly three-dimensional, white to cream-white crystal group with coralloid to stalactitic growth. The surface consists of numerous fine-crystalline to drusy areas, giving the specimen a lively texture.
Measuring 8 × 6 × 3 cm and weighing 71.3 g, this is a cabinet specimen. The specimen is unusually lightweight and appears very sculptural due to the strongly branched aggregates.
Coralloid to stalactitic Aragonite aggregates
The Aragonite is white to cream-white and opaque. Individual larger areas grade into strongly branched, nodular and coralloid aggregates.
The surface is predominantly fine-crystalline to drusy and therefore shows a delicate luster. In several areas, the aggregates project from the specimen in finger-like to tapering forms, making the characteristic stalactitic to coralloid growth particularly evident.
The individual aggregates are densely intergrown and together form a complex, three-dimensional overall structure.
Aragonite from the classic locality Santa Eulalia
Santa Eulalia in Chihuahua is a classic Mexican mining district known for a great variety of mineral specimens. Aragonite from the district occurs, among other forms, as white coralloid and stalactitic aggregates.
This specimen displays that development particularly well. Especially attractive is the combination of strongly branched growth, pale coloration and fine-crystalline surface, which makes the piece interesting from different viewing angles.
