Measuring 10.5 × 5.5 × 5.0 cm and weighing 431.7 g, this is a large cabinet specimen. The Baryte forms large parts of the specimen and shows a distinctly bladed to tabular habit. The crystals are closely stacked and create a characteristic, step-like structure.
Bladed to tabular Baryte with Chalcopyrite
The Baryte is white to cream-colored and opaque. The individual crystals are predominantly bladed to tabular and closely intergrown.
Numerous small Chalcopyrite crystals occur between and on the Baryte crystals. Depending on the surface, they show a dull to metallic luster and stand out from the pale Baryte through their brownish to brassy coloration.
The Chalcopyrite crystals are not concentrated in one area but are distributed across different parts of the specimen. As a result, the Baryte remains visually dominant while the Chalcopyrite forms a contrasting associated mineralization.
Baryte from the Dreislar Mine
The Dreislar Mine in the Sauerland region is one of Germany’s classic localities for Baryte. The locality is particularly known for extensive, commonly bladed to tabular Baryte specimens with associated minerals such as Chalcopyrite.
