Muscovite from Halden, Norway – Tabular Crystals on Light Matrix

This Muscovite specimen from Halden, Norway shows numerous gray to black Muscovite crystals on a light-colored matrix. The crystals cover a large part of the specimen and form a three-dimensional surface densely coated with mica.

With dimensions of 5.8 × 4.8 × 1.5 cm and a weight of 60.7 g, this is a Cabinet specimen. Particularly striking is the strong contrast between the darker, highly reflective Muscovite crystals and the white to cream-colored matrix.

Tabular to platy Muscovite crystals

The Muscovite is predominantly tabular to platy in habit. In addition to flat, stacked crystal packages, numerous individual crystals project distinctly from the surface. Several of them show straight edges and pronounced elongated crystal faces.

The crystals are differently oriented and partly intergrown. This creates a lively three-dimensional structure that changes in appearance depending on the viewing angle. Some crystals project clearly above the surrounding mineralization.

The surfaces show a distinct pearly to vitreous luster, which can appear silvery gray to dark gray depending on the angle of illumination. The characteristic layered structure of mica is clearly visible in several crystal packages.

Muscovite from Halden in Norway

For this specimen, only Halden, Norway is documented as the locality. Several pegmatitic occurrences containing Muscovite are known from the Halden area. However, the available locality information does not allow the specimen to be assigned with certainty to a particular quarry, mine, or individual pegmatite occurrence.

For this reason, the locality is deliberately given without further specification. The specimen is particularly interesting to collectors because of the large number of visible Muscovite crystals and the strong contrast with the light-colored matrix.
