Bronze-Brown Siderite on Whitish Quartz from Muzo

This mineralogically interesting small cabinet specimen shows a contrasting association of bronze-brown siderite and whitish translucent quartz from the Muzo mining district in the Colombian Department of Boyacá.

The siderite crystals form a dense, prominent group at the upper end of the specimen. They are mostly tabular to rhombohedral and are partly intergrown in rosette-like aggregates. Their brown color with bronze highlights stands out clearly against the pale quartz crystals.

In addition to the larger siderite group, smaller siderite crystals and aggregates are visible on other surfaces of the specimen. This allows the mineral association to be viewed from several angles.

Aesthetic Siderite-Quartz Paragenesis from the Colombian Emerald District

Muzo is best known for its emerald deposits. The mineralization of the district is associated with hydrothermal veins and fractures in dark, organic-rich sedimentary rocks. In addition to emerald, various associated minerals occur there; quartz and siderite are documented from the wider Muzo area.

The specimen has a slender, upright form. The concentrated siderite group creates a bronze-colored crystal cap on the pale quartz and gives the piece a clear contrast in both color and form.

With dimensions of 5.7 × 2.8 × 1.5 cm and a weight of 33.2 g, this is a compact small cabinet specimen. Its main appeal lies in the clearly visible and aesthetic association of siderite and quartz from the well-known Colombian mining district.
