This tourmaline-quartz specimen comes from Stak Nala in the Haramosh Mountains, Roundu District, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. Several dark, prismatic elbaite crystals occur on and partly within a colorless to white rock crystal.
The largest tourmaline crystal reaches a length of approximately 2.5 cm. The dark, lustrous crystals form a distinct contrast with the transparent to translucent quartz. Some of the tourmaline crystals are partly enclosed by the rock crystal.
Elbaite and Rock Crystal from Stak Nala
Stak Nala is one of Pakistan’s classic tourmaline localities. The pegmatites there are particularly known for elbaite in different colors and for intergrowths with quartz and albite.
The specimen measures 5.0 × 3.3 × 3.0 cm and weighs 46.3 g. This makes it a compact small cabinet specimen from a classic locality in northern Pakistan.
