Attractive galena, chalcopyrite, and quartz specimen from Baia Sprie, Romania. Silvery-gray galena crystals and brass-yellow chalcopyrite are intergrown on a light-colored matrix covered with numerous white to colorless quartz crystals. The upright crystal arrangement and contrasting mineral association give the specimen a varied appearance.
Galena, Chalcopyrite, and Quartz from the Historic Baia Sprie Mining District
This mineral-rich specimen comes from Baia Sprie in Maramureș County, Romania, a historic mining district in the Eastern Carpathians. It features a distinctive association of silvery-gray galena, brass-yellow chalcopyrite, and numerous white to colorless quartz crystals.
A particularly characteristic feature is the narrow, upright arrangement of the specimen. The light-colored quartz crystals form a dense, partly translucent crystal covering, from which numerous metallic galena and chalcopyrite crystals protrude. The strong color contrast between the three minerals creates a visually varied appearance despite the specimen’s relatively narrow shape.
The galena crystals are predominantly cubic in habit, with some showing irregular surfaces and stepped crystal faces. Particularly interesting are the chalcopyrite areas directly intergrown with the galena. The close-up photographs reveal brass-yellow areas with partly rough, textured surfaces. The spatial arrangement of the crystals and the different reflective properties of the sulfides add depth to the specimen.
Baia Sprie belongs to the historic Baia Mare mining district, known for its hydrothermal lead-zinc mineralization and diverse mineral associations. This specimen documents the occurrence of galena, chalcopyrite, and quartz together in this classic mining district.
Measuring 8.4 × 3.5 × 2 cm, it is a compact collector’s specimen with a contrasting mineral association and an interesting upright crystal arrangement.
