Galena with Quartz from Baia Sprie

This mineral specimen comes from Baia Sprie in Maramureș, Romania, a historic mining district well known for classic sulfide and gang-mineral assemblages.

The specimen is characterized by numerous lead-gray galena crystals that stand out clearly against the light-colored quartz matrix. The galena displays a distinct metallic luster and occurs in blocky to complex polyhedral crystal forms. This gives the surface a more varied appearance than specimens dominated only by simple cubic galena.

A particularly attractive feature is the strong contrast between the dark, metallic galena and the pale quartz crystals. The quartz forms a dense crystal coating over large parts of the specimen. The crystals range from white to colorless and are partly translucent.

The mineralization is not limited to a single display face. Numerous quartz crystals and smaller galena crystals also occur on the sides and reverse, making the specimen mineralogically interesting from several viewing angles.

Measuring 5.5 × 3.7 × 3 cm, the specimen has a compact and easily displayed size. The abundant galena crystals, pale quartz, and contrasting mineral association make it an attractive collector specimen from a classic Romanian mining region.
