Aesthetic sphalerite-galena specimen from the Madan ore district in Bulgaria. Highly lustrous dark sphalerite crystals contrast strongly with light-colored quartz crystals and unusually developed galena. The galena crystals partly show flattened to elongated blocky forms with cubic and subordinate octahedral faces. A characteristic sulfide assemblage from a classic European lead-zinc mining district.
Sphalerite, Galena and Quartz from Madan
This mineral specimen comes from the well-known Madan ore district in the Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria. The district is one of the classic European localities for attractive lead-zinc mineralization and is especially known for specimens containing sphalerite, galena and quartz.
Particularly striking are the numerous dark brown to nearly black sphalerite crystals, which show a strong luster and occur as complex crystals and aggregates across the specimen. Because of their highly reflective surfaces, they stand out clearly from the other minerals.
An interesting contrast is provided by the lead-gray galena crystals. Several galena crystals show an unusual flattened to elongated blocky habit. In addition to predominantly cubic faces, smaller octahedral faces are also visible, giving the crystals a distinctly more complex appearance than simple galena cubes.
Numerous white to colorless quartz crystals occur between the sulfide minerals. The pale quartz creates a strong visual contrast with the dark, highly lustrous sphalerite and the metallic gray galena.
The specimen is attractive from several viewing angles. On the front, larger galena crystals occur together with highly lustrous sphalerite, while the reverse is more strongly characterized by quartz and numerous smaller dark sphalerite crystals.
Measuring 5.5 × 3.9 × 3 cm, the specimen has a compact yet highly presentable size. Overall, the combination of different crystal forms, lusters and colors makes it an excellent example of the classic sphalerite-galena-quartz assemblage from Madan.
