Mineralogically interesting hand specimen with an approximately 1.2 cm long black zirconolite crystal, historically known as polymignite, together with silvery metallic molybdenite in a pale pegmatite matrix from Håkestad Quarry near Larvik, Norway.
Rare Zirconolite with Molybdenite from Håkestad Quarry
This mineralogically interesting hand specimen shows black zirconolite, historically also known as polymignite, together with silvery metallic molybdenite in a pale, coarse-grained pegmatite matrix. The clearly visible zirconolite crystal reaches a length of approximately 1.2 cm and stands out strongly against the surrounding feldspar and mica-rich matrix.
In addition to the larger crystal, further dark, partly embedded crystal sections are visible. The molybdenite occurs as metallic, platy aggregates and adds to the specimen’s unusual mineral association.
Characteristic Pegmatite Specimen from the Larvik Area
Håkestad Quarry near Larvik is known for mineral-rich alkaline pegmatites. Zirconolite from Håkestad has also been studied mineralogically and is closely connected with the distinctive composition of the Larvik plutonic complex. The historical name polymignite is now used as an older designation for zirconolite.
With dimensions of 7.5 × 7.0 × 3.5 cm and a weight of 183.5 g, the specimen is well suited for a systematic mineral collection. Its main appeal lies in the uncommon mineral species, the clearly visible crystal and its association with molybdenite rather than in a completely freestanding crystal group.
