Andradite Crystals on Skarn Matrix from Skjerpemyr, Norway

This large Andradite specimen comes from the classic Skjerpemyr locality in the Grua mining district near Lunner, Norway. Numerous olive-green to dark-green Andradite crystals cover extensive areas of the natural skarn matrix.

The crystals occur both on exposed surfaces and protected within cavities and depressions in the matrix. Especially in these recessed areas, numerous well-defined crystal faces can be observed. Their varying orientations create numerous reflections as the specimen is viewed from different angles.

Andradite on a three-dimensional skarn matrix

A characteristic feature of this specimen is its irregularly structured matrix with several cavities, projections and crystallized spaces. The Andradite does not form a uniform, flat coating, but follows the three-dimensional structure of the host rock.

The crystals display predominantly olive-green to dark-green colors. Individual crystals may appear lighter or darker depending on the lighting and viewing angle. Their strongly reflecting crystal faces stand out clearly against the more subdued areas of the matrix.

Classic Skjerpemyr locality in Norway

Skjerpemyr is one of the well-known skarn localities of the Grua mining district in Norway. The locality has long been known for characteristic skarn minerals and particularly for Andradite garnet. The area is now protected, giving historical specimens from this locality particular significance in terms of provenance.

With dimensions of 9.5 × 6.0 × 4.5 cm, this is a substantial Cabinet specimen. The strongly three-dimensional matrix and the numerous Andradite crystals distributed over large areas of the specimen provide interesting crystallization both in the overall view and in close-up.
