Galena (PbS) is one of the most important lead ore minerals and a classic collector’s mineral. Its characteristic features include a lead-gray color, pronounced metallic luster, and frequently well-developed crystals. Cubic crystals are particularly common, although octahedra and combinations of different crystal forms also occur. Galena crystallizes in the cubic crystal system and exhibits perfect cubic cleavage.
The mineral is widespread in hydrothermal ore deposits and lead-zinc mineralizations. Typical associated minerals include sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, quartz, and calcite. Barite, fluorite, and cerussite also occur in corresponding mineral associations. Classic European localities include the lead-zinc deposits of Olkusz in Poland and the polymetallic mining districts of Baia Sprie and Baia Mare in Romania.
This category features galena mineral specimens from various localities around the world. The selection includes galena crystals and interesting mineral associations from Romania, Poland, Bulgaria, Morocco, and the United States. Specimens range from cubic and octahedral crystals to mineral associations with sphalerite, chalcopyrite, quartz, or marcasite. These different localities illustrate the diversity of galena crystal habits and the geological conditions under which the mineral forms.
Each mineral specimen is documented with the most precise locality information available, dimensions, weight, and original photographs. Particular attention is given to the development of crystal faces, metallic luster, crystal arrangement, and associated minerals. The selection ranges from compact crystal groups to complex ore mineral specimens from classic mining districts.
